What is gripe water?

Gripe water was first manufactured in London around 1928. The formula was also copied in India at that time. Both products were successful and are still available today. Earlier gripe water was made in the home or by individual doctors.

Gripe water is a natural liquid solution which provides relief for babies and children suffering from minor stomach discomforts due to gas, colic and hiccups. Handed down from generation to generation, it has been used in many parts of the world, particularly Europe, for more than one hundred years.

Gripe water is usually a blend of healthy ingredients known to be beneficial for digestion.

What are the ingredients in gripe water?

Each gripe water manufacturer has it's own gripe water formula. Gripe water formulas often contain one or more of these ingredients.
• Anise to aid digestion
• Angelica to soothe upset stomach
• Caraway to relieve flatulence and indigestion
• Cardamom to relieves flatulence and indigestion
• Catnip to support digestion and relieve upset stomach
• Chamomile to settle the stomach
• Cinnamon bark to aid digestion and relieve flatulence and vomiting
• Dill to dispels flatulence, stimulate appetite and settle stomach
• Fennel for stomach upset, hiccups, gas
• Ginger to ease nausea and other digestive problems
• Sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) to decrease stomach acidity

Is gripe water safe?

Each gripe water manufacturer says their gripe water is safe when used as directed. You should consult your pediatrician if you have any concerns about using gripe water.

Because gripe water is an herbal supplement, each manufacturer has this statement on it's product: "These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease."
